Crafting Three aviators of a completely different kind

Boomerang, dragon, rocket? Sounds more like flying objects for outdoors. Unless they are very small and made of paper or cardboard. For each apartment offers enough airspace for these models

The mini dragon: construction manual

You do not always have time to fly a kite. Just imagine: It blows great – but unfortunately you are on the way to school. Therefore, we introduce you to a mini model, so to speak, the kite in between. You can tie it to the bike handlebar, or just pull behind you.

You need:

– A DIN A4 sheet of airmail paper

– a few meters of solid yarn and a sewing needle

– scissors, ruler and pencil

– paper glue

1. First you draw a rectangle on the paper, 12 by 16 centimeters in size, there the outline of the kite. You then separate it with the pair of scissors. Cut two strips one centimeter wide, one 12 centimeters long, the other 16.

2. Both strips fold and buckle lengthwise. Then you stick the longer on the longitudinal axis of the kite. Before you stick the second strip, you have to cut both paper struts so that you can put them together. The protruding ends of both struts cut off her.

3. Use the needle to thread a piece of yarn about 80 centimeters long through the back of the kite. And knot it tight – but watch out that the knot does not tear the paper. Then cut five to six rectangles from the rest of the paper, each two by five inches in size. The knots you evenly spaced to the dragon’s tail.

4. The kite string binds her six inches from the top around the longitudinal strut. This yarn should be at least one meter long, on the other hand, there is no limit to the top. Now you only need a little bit of wind – like the wind during cycling or endurance run.

The air pressure rocket: construction manual

Three, two, one … ignition! This rocket works completely without sound and smoke. She is flying with air. Exactly the right thing for home use. However, the following construction manual is not easy. Do not despair! Once you get the hang of it, rocket construction will be a breeze for you.

You need to craft:

– two A4 sheets of solid paper (about 120 gsm)

– scissors, ruler and pencil

– paper glue

How to make:

1. Cut out a six by eight centimeter rectangle for the rocket hull. Draw lines as in the picture, fold along these lines – and fold the whole thing accordingly: In cross-section, the rocket is square, the fifth side of the folded rectangle serves as a glue flap.

At the short folds you fold the body together so that it is closed at this end and flows into a cross. Then you glue the cross together from the inside – and the glue flap.

2. The tail unit is created from a second rectangle. Marks, folds and folds the 3 by 14.4 centimeter piece as you can see in the drawing. Then glue it to the open end of the fuselage. To put the finishing touches to the rocket, you cut off the top corners of the four wings and the tip of the rocket.

3. Now comes the bellows, which gives your rocket the thrust. Cuts a shape from the second sheet of paper as seen in the picture. Along the dashed lines you fold. And so that the long fold edges (red) can bend in both directions, the short oblique (yellow) but so that the edges stand up when you look at it.

The dotted lines help to draw the oblique lines. Otherwise you do not need her. Now you have to fold the bellows like a concertina.

4. Before you glue the launch pad together, you need to install the rocket mount. For this you need a five-by-five-centimeter piece of paper. Marks, cuts and folds as in the picture. Stick it together, push it from below through the square hole in the bellows and attach the holder with their adhesive tabs.

5. Now you can glue the ramp together and fold the front corners. Do a few tests: Puff in the holder and see if all seams are tight. If not: glue! Because every hole through which air escapes reduces rocket boost.

Then all you have to do is put the rocket on the mount and hit the bellows powerfully, so that the blast of air blows up the rocket. It probably will not fly to the moon – but at least to the ceiling.

Crafting: The finger boomerang

Boomerangs! Are not these the throwing devices with which Australians once hunted kangaroos? With our cardboard version you could not even kill a housefly. But the finger boomerang has an advantage: it flies around inside, without taking half the apartment apart …

You need for the boomerang:

– a piece of solid cardboard (7 x 7 cm)

– scissors, ruler and pencil

– Hardcover book

This is how the boomerang is made:

1. Draw all lines on the cardboard square as shown in the picture. Along the solid lines you cut out, the dashed lines are folded. But be careful: cuts and folds only to the small square in the middle (darker in the drawing).

2. Separate the wing tips with the pair of scissors and bend the four arms of the boomerang down the fold slightly, so that they look like long gable roofs. On the other hand, the wing tips bend slightly upwards – done!

3. Now you can make the departure: Take the book as a launch pad. Place the boomerang on one edge of the lid and shoot it away with a strong snap of the finger.

Your boomerang will fly a small bow, quickly turning around its own axis and – with a bit of skill – arrive back at you so that you can even catch it.
